The Lofts at Shriver Square are conveniently located at the corner of 11th St & Phillips Ave in the heart of downtown Sioux Falls, South Dakota.

An icon of the Sioux Falls skyline, Shriver Square was once home to Shriver-Johnson Department store, at one time the largest department store in South Dakota.

Alva R. Shriver and John Henry Johnson built the 89,900 square foot building with 5 floors, a mezzanine and a basement. The building is in the Classical Revival style, designed by the architecture firm of Perkins an McWayne.

When Shriver and Johnson opened their new location, which replaced their much smaller storefront at 117 N. Phillips Avenue, they increased their staff from 11 to 150.

The new department store had two cafes, a salon, restrooms, a nursery, post office, air conditioning and many more amenities to lure shoppers.  Visiting Shriver-Johnson was an event the entire family enjoyed. Advertisements of the time used the tagline “Meet Me on the Mezzanine-Shriver-Johnson Co” as a way to entice people to come spend time at Shriver Johnson.

During the Cold War, the basement of Shriver Square was stocked for use as a fallout shelter with tins of biscuits, potable water barrels and medicine.

The Shriver-Johnson Department store enjoyed success downtown for many years, but trying to capitalize on the mall craze of the 1970s, they opened a 40,000 square foot location in the Western Mall. The Western Mall location would end up closing its doors in 1986, ending 72 years in business.

After the departure of the store, the Shriver building sat vacant for several years and would fall into disrepair. Eventually investors would take interest in the building and renovate the historic landmark.

Shriver Square has had a few rebirths, first as predominately retail and office space, then as a downtown business club, and now currently as retail, office space, and 33 residential lofts.

A variety of local boutiques, restaurants, entertainment venues, parks, and museums are located within walking distance.  Interested in learning more about the businesses downtown? Check out Downtown Sioux Falls website for more information.
